Family? What is family?

What is family? What does family mean? I’ve always been told, growing up, that family is your siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. as an adult, I’ve come to realize that family isn’t blood. Family doesn’t have to be related to you. Family is what you make it. Family can be a group of friends that you have that love you and your kids like they are their parents. It can be your circle that your kids run in and their parents. Family can be a group that you don’t even know because you have never actually met them in person but have spoken to them on the phone and video because they live in another state or country. Family is what you make it.

But what happens when that family that you built for your kids, turns out to not be family at all? Or turns out to be not as big, strong, or tight as you thought? What do you do then? When they are all you have? When you have told them everything and anything. When you have vented to them about so much stuff that you normally wouldn’t have told anyone else. All because you thought that your little tight nit family was but isn’t.

What happens when you start feeling like those people you thought were your close family just want you to clean up after them, just want you to handle everything all the time and you just get sick and tired of doing it all because for one you already have a lot on your plate and for two you don’t want to be the one to handle it all the time.
